Power Delivery Consultants, Inc. is an engineering-consulting firm with a highly experienced staff that provides specialized consulting services for overhead lines, underground transmission cables, and power transformers. Services run the full spectrum from initial planning through O&M support.

With our combined overhead line, power cable and power transformers expertise, we offer the unique ability to provide the "full menu" of services for transmission and distribution power delivery. Services are provided to electric utilities, research organizations, merchant power producers and manufacturers. In addition, PDC frequently provides engineering expertise as a subcontractor to architect-engineering firms for large transmission or distribution projects.
Power Delivery Consultants, Inc. (PDC) specializes in providing engineering services to clients working with underground, submarine, and aerial electric power cable systems, overhead lines and related equipment, and transformers. Our staff of engineers averages over 35 years experience with background in manufacturing, application engineering, utility systems, R&D and industrials. We can provide engineering services to assist with the design or modification of existing distribution and transmission circuits, ampacity calculations, uprating of older lines including an evaluation of remaining life, and field testing services.
Our experienced staff provides a wide range of services to the electric utility industry. Areas in which we have industry-accepted expertise include:
PDC engineers have been responsible for a great deal of the original research and development work on overhead line uprating and monitoring, underground cable installation and operation, transformer ratings, software, laboratory research, and field services. This R&D work has been conducted for EPRI and others.
Each of our senior staff members has more than 40 years experience in electric power transmission, and their accomplishments have been acknowledged by their being elected Fellows of the IEEE. Our younger employees continue this tradition, and chair committees, subcommittees and working groups within the IEEE. Every member of our staff is a respected industry expert in his/her specialty.
PDC's stature in the industry is reflected in the number of associate consultants who have maintained long-term alliances with Power Delivery Consultants, Inc. These associates have distinguished careers at utilities, manufacturers, and consulting firms, and have chosen to join PDC’s team to provide their expertise to the unique and challenging projects that are PDC's specialty.
PDC engineers provide our clients in the electric utility industry with practical, state-of-the-art engineering guidance. PDC's clients benefit from our many years of experience with utility projects, our extensive activities with technical societies such as the IEEE Towers, Poles and Conductors Committee, Insulated Conductors Committee and Transformers Committee as well as CIGRE Study Committees 21 and 22, and our key roles in much of the important transmission system research in the United States.
PDC's staff members and our associates have authored or co-authored literally hundreds of IEEE papers, articles, books, and EPRI reports on electric power transmission and distribution, and our experts are frequently invited to lecture or take part in courses on these topics. They have written major sections of the McGraw Hill Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers and the EPRI Red Book on overhead transmission systems, and have written major portions of the 1992 EPRI Underground Transmission Systems Reference Book as well as the 2007 update.
PDC is the only firm that has longstanding experience in specialized analytical calculations such as impedances, magnetic fields, sheath voltage calculations, ampacity analysis, pulling tension and sidewall pressure analysis, hydraulic calculations, etc. We literally “wrote the book” on some of these topics and have prepared original software for the analyses.
The extensive practical and field experience available from our engineers is complemented by availability of associate consultants who specialize in field installation and construction supervision.
PDC has worked for more than 150 clients, including electric utilities, research organizations such as EPRI, manufacturers, independent power producers, law firms, architect-engineering firms, and other consultants.
PDC does not provide surveying, drafting, or other detailed design services. We are frequently retained by architect-engineering firms to provide our underground or overhead engineering expertise so the A-E firms can concentrate on the details of installation design.
PDC applies specialized skills to a variety of challenging projects. Some examples of our recent work include design of a 138kV XLPE Cable in Pennsylvania, research engineering for a Distribution Cable Test Site, several types of Field Measurements, Ampacity Audits & Uprating on existing cable systems, Operation & Maintenance Services for new and existing circuits, and overall New Circuit Design. We would enjoy discussing our recent projects with you and look forward to you contacting us.
Our experience is shared in the many courses and seminars that we have prepared and presented to the utility industry. These courses cover R&D activities, line- and cable-related system-planning studies, system design, specification and installation, and system operation and maintenance. PDC offers general courses that are attended by engineers from many utilities, plus customized courses - with utility-specific notes - given at an individual utility. These courses combine practical design experience with the latest technology, and reflect a good understanding of how lines, cables and transformers integrate into the utility T&D system while providing an overall technical understanding and analytical know-how where appropriate. This is in contrast to many seminars which are based primarily on textbook information or, at the other extreme, practical, but dated, experience.
PDC's main offices are located in the Albany, NY area; we have a satellite office in Connecticut and an associate with offices in New Mexico.
